National Identity Day Celebration: Tinubu reaffirms commitment to digital identity

As Nigerians marks National Identity Day today, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emphasized the critical importance of digital identity in the nation’s development.
The President who duely represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume.
Speaking at the event, noted that the occasion is not just a day for celebration but a recognition of the fundamental right of every citizen to possess a unique, verifiable proof of identity.
He highlighted that this right guarantees individuals’ protection, sustenance, and support as recognized members of society.
This year’s National Identity Day, themed “Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) – Enabling Access to Services,” underscores the pivotal role that digital identity plays in the nation’s socioeconomic progress.
“In today’s digital age, the ability to prove one’s identity is not just a matter of convenience; it is a cornerstone of our socioeconomic progress,” President Tinubu stated.
He emphasized that DPI is the backbone for access to essential services such as healthcare, education, financial inclusion, and social welfare.
According to the President, Nigeria’s ongoing development is linked to ensuring every citizen, irrespective of their background or location, has access to these services.
He underscored the administration’s 8-point agenda, which includes food security, job creation, and poverty eradication, as directly tied to the success of digital identity systems.
“By leveraging DPI, we can streamline service delivery, reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks, and ensure that government programs reach those who need them most,” President Tinubu said.
He referenced various government initiatives such as the student loan scheme, the National Youth Talent Export Programme, and the Renewed Hope City and Estate Housing initiative, all of which rely on a robust digital identity system to target the right beneficiaries.
President Tinubu also commended the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) under the leadership of its Director General/CEO, Engineer Abisoye Coker Odusote, for its efforts in advancing the digital identity agenda in collaboration with other government agencies.
He praised their dedication to ensuring the success of key government programs and initiatives.
As the nation marked National Identity Day, President Tinubu called on all Nigerians to renew their commitment to building a robust digital public infrastructure.
He expressed optimism for a future where every citizen has the tools to thrive and contribute to the nation’s growth.
The President concluded by reaffirming the administration’s vision for a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria, where digital identity remains a key enabler of sustainable development.
“Together, we can create a future where every citizen has the means to thrive and contribute to our nation’s development,” he said.
