My battle axes are newly sharpened, I am ready for war — Dele Farotimi dares Afe Babalola

By Sodiq Adelakun

Human rights activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has declared his readiness to face the ongoing legal battle with Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Afe Babalola.

Farotimi, who is currently embroiled in a defamation case, made the bold statement on social media on Sunday, saying, “My battle axes are newly sharpened, I am ready for war.”

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Farotimi expressed his confidence in the face of the legal challenges, asserting that he was “strong enough to rumble unruffled against principalities and powers.”

He also reflected on his determination, stating, “My resolve was NEVER tested, but I was waiting for the next round of the fight to commence.”

These remarks follow Farotimi’s arrest for allegedly defaming Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD) in Ado Ekiti. His arrest came after Babalola filed a complaint, leading to charges of criminal defamation.

A few weeks ago, a Chief Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti granted Farotimi bail in the sum of N30 million, which he met, resulting in his release from custody.

Despite his imprisonment, Farotimi maintained that his spirits remained unbroken. He stated that the initial round of the legal battle had already been lost by those responsible for his detention, indicating his readiness for the legal war ahead.

“My guns are primed,” Farotimi proclaimed, signalling his determination to pursue the case with relentless focus.

He noted that, despite the challenges, he is resolute in defending his honour and his right to freedom of expression.
