The battle against tuberculosis (TB) in Mushin Local Government has taken a bold step forward, with Mrs. Jumoke Bamigboye flagging off a comprehensive sensitization campaign to curb the deadly disease.
The event, held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at the Mushin Local Government Secretariat, marks a significant moment in the local fight against TB, in line with Lagos State’s commitment to end the disease by 2030.
Mrs. Bamigboye, who was appointed the campaign’s Ambassador for Mushin, emphasised the severity of tuberculosis, describing it as one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases.
She reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring that residents of the local government benefit from a well-structured, community-based approach to fighting the epidemic.
“Together, we can stop the spread of Tuberculosis in Mushin. Our campaign will provide the right tools, awareness, and support to protect our community,” said Mrs. Bamigboye, stressing the importance of community outreach, screening exercises, and health education in halting the spread of the disease.
Dr. Ayodeji Bamigboye, representing the Lagos State Ministry of Health at the event, revealed alarming statistics about the prevalence of tuberculosis in Mushin, noting that the local government is ranked among the top five areas in Lagos with the highest cases of TB.
The Medical Director of Mushin General Hospital, Dr. Oluyemi Taiwo, expressed readiness to partner with the Mushin Local Government in the fight against TB, following the ongoing support from the Bamigboye-led administration.
“We are fully prepared to offer free screening and treatment for TB patients at Mushin General Hospital,” she said, adding that personnel training for proper sensitization was underway to ensure the community is well-informed about TB prevention and treatment.
Highlighting the local government’s commitment, Hon. Femi Nuga, the Supervisor for Health in Mushin Local Government, confirmed that a one-week TB sensitization campaign had already begun.
This initiative includes free screenings and treatments at all Primary Healthcare Centres in the area.
He also noted that the Executive Chairman of Mushin, Hon. Emmanuel Bamigboye, had made early preparations for the campaign, underlining his administration’s dedication to promoting the health and well-being of Mushin residents.
“The goal to eliminate tuberculosis from Lagos by 2030 has already started with this initiative. The free screenings and treatment at our Primary Healthcare Centres will be ongoing, ensuring no one is left behind in the fight against TB,” said Hon. Nuga.
