MTN and others receive permits for electricity generation

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has granted permits for mini-grid electricity generation to Golden Penny Power Limited, MTN Communications Nigeria Limited, Havenhill Synergy, and others. In Q1 2024, NERC issued nine new off-grid generation licenses totaling 109.69 megawatts, along with three new trading licenses.
Golden Penny Power Limited received a license for six off-grid gas plants across Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, and Cross River states, with a combined capacity of 100MW.

MTN was approved to build four captive generation plants in Lagos State with a total capacity of 15.94MW. Besides MTN, SweetCo Foods Limited, African Steel Mills Nigeria Limited, and other companies also secured permits for captive power. NERC issued nine captive power generation permits in Q1 2024, totaling 52.57MW.

The commission also licensed mini-grid developers such as Daybreak Power Solutions and TIS Renewable Energy Limited and certified six Meter Service Providers, including four meter installers and two manufacturers.

Additionally, NERC released one regulation and 36 new orders, covering areas such as eligible customer regulations and tariff orders for distribution and transmission companies.
