Mohbad: Police exhume body, complete autopsy

Following a cry for justice to bring to book perpetrators begins the death of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba popularly known as Mohbad, the Lagos State Police Command have exhumed the late singer’s body and completed an autopsy.

Mohbad was announced dead last Tuesday and a series of protests tagged #JusticeforMohbad had rocked the streets of Nigerian cities with many fans pointing an accusing finger at the Marlian Record Label’s owner, Afeez Fashola, professionally known as Naira Marley.

On Thursday morning, Lagos police spokesperson, Ben Hundeyin said Mohbad’s body had been exhumed. He said the autopsy will follow.

Hundeying made this known on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Exhumation completed. Autopsy to commence.”

However, as at the time of filing this report, the Lagos Police Spokesperson had given an update to the investigation noting that the autopsy has been completed and the details will be communicated later.

The Nigeria Police had previously vowed to probe his death, as the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also asked that the Department of State Service (DSS) join in the investigation.

Earlier, a statement issued by the command’s spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, said consequent upon the growing public concerns and the preliminary police review of the general circumstances surrounding the death of Mohbad, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Idowu Owohunwa, has directed the commencement of full-scale criminal investigation into the case.

The Special Investigation Team, based in the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), will oversee the investigation.

To this end, Hundeyin said the Commissioner of Police has constituted a Special Investigation Team within the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to coordinate the investigation.

“The team, which comprises seasoned homicide detectives, has been tasked to aggregate all allegations, suspicions and insinuations from various sources on the death of the singer and undertake a professional, diligent and timely investigation with a view to establishing facts, clearing all doubts and ensuring that justice is manifestly served through a meticulous process that will deploy all requisite protocols (which may include exhumation), as well as technical and scientific tools that are vital to the detailed investigation of homicide allegations of this nature,” he said.

He stated that in aid of this initiative, the Lagos State Government has pledged its total support to the Special Investigation Team in all ways required to guarantee a diligent investigative exercise.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu gave this assurance while consulting with the State Commissioner of Police earlier today on how best to ensure that the case is expeditiously investigated and justice delivered promptly,” he added.
