Mobile court convicts 20 tricycle operators in Edo

A Mobile Magistrates’ Court in Ekae at Sapele Road, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo on Thursday convicted 20 persons for operating tricycles without permit.

The Chief Magistrate, Prince Mutairu Oare, convicted the 20 offenders and ordered them to pay a fine of N5, 000, after they had pleaded guilty to the offence.

Oare also ordered the convicts to obtain the rider’s permit forthwith before they could claim their tricycles.

He said daily parking fees of N1, 000 would be charged for their impounded tricycles, should they fail to obtain the permit within the stipulated period.

He further held that the owners would have their tricycles forfeited to the state government should they fail to comply with the terms and conditions of the judgment after six weeks from the date of judgment.

The Prosecution Counsel, Mrs P.O. Ovbiagele, had told the court that the 20 persons were apprehended within the Ekae axis, at Sapele road riding their tricycles without permit.

She said the offence contravened sections 9(4) and 27 of the Second Schedule of the Edo Traffic Control and Management Agency Law, 2010.

Reports statethat obtaining rider’s permit from state board of internal revenue costs N10, 000 and is annually renewable with same fee.
