Military pledges support for sustainable food security in Nigeria – CDS
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, has reaffirmed the Nigerian military’s commitment to promoting sustainable food security by establishing agricultural initiatives.
Speaking in Abuja on Thursday at the unveiling of the Defence Farm and Agro-Allied Products logo, Gen. Musa underscored the pivotal role of agriculture in ensuring national stability and economic resilience.
He noted that climate change, environmental degradation, and regional conflicts continue to threaten food security, posing severe risks to national security. To address this, the Defence Headquarters launched the Defence Farm and Agro-Allied Products initiative in May 2023.
“This initiative aligns with my leadership’s ‘People-Centric’ policy, supporting the federal government’s efforts to mitigate food security challenges,” Gen. Musa stated.
He further explained that the initiative aims to create employment opportunities, boost rural infrastructure, and significantly contribute to food production. Given the extensive planning and consultations undertaken, the CDS expressed confidence that the project would have a transformative impact on host communities while enhancing national security.
With similar projects expected to be replicated nationwide, Gen. Musa envisions a future where modern farming techniques drive economic growth and sustainable development.
The CDS called on both military personnel and the general public to embrace the initiative and leverage its benefits. He also extended his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his leadership and dedication to national peace, security, and economic prosperity.
Major General I.M. Abdullahi, Chairman of the Defence Farms Committee, highlighted the military’s role in agriculture as a means of fostering national development and stability. He noted that the military’s contributions could extend beyond security to direct agricultural involvement, research and development, and humanitarian efforts.
He further explained that the Defence Farms initiative is a non-kinetic approach to addressing security challenges, aligning with the Federal Government’s broader strategy to enhance food production.
The inaugural Defence Farm and Agro-Allied Products site has been established at the Gurara Hydropower and Agricultural Tourism Zone. This location was selected for its fertile land and ideal environment, making it suitable for agricultural development.
According to Maj. Gen. Abdullahi, “The Defence Farms and Agro-Allied Products project is designed as a self-sustaining, eco-friendly agricultural and tourism hub, ensuring operational efficiency while preserving the environment.”
