Military personnel kills police officer in Zamfara

The Zamfara State Police Command has strongly condemned the fatal shooting of one of its officers, Halliru Liman, by military personnel. The command is calling for a comprehensive investigation into the incident and insists that those accountable be brought to justice.

In a statement released to the press on Thursday, ASP Yazid Abubakar, the command’s spokesperson, expressed deep distress over the senseless killing of Liman, who was serving as the Divisional Police Officer for Wasagu Division in Kebbi State at the time of his death.

Abubakar detailed that Liman was en route to Birnin Kebbi for a meeting when he was intercepted at Danmarke in Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara by military forces from Operation Dadarin Daji. Despite identifying himself as a police officer, Liman was shot on the spot by the military personnel.

According to Abubakar, the officer was murdered after being singled out by the leader of the military group, one Hassan, who shot Liman in the head, leading to his immediate death.

The command has demanded that authorities promptly investigate the circumstances leading to this tragic event and ensure that those responsible face justice.

Abubakar emphasized that this act represents a serious breach of the rules of engagement and undermines inter-agency cooperation. He called for immediate action to rectify this grievous incident and hold the perpetrators accountable.

“The police and military must collaborate effectively to uphold peace and security rather than engage in violent clashes that erode public trust. We extend our heartfelt condolences to SP Halliru Liman’s family and colleagues, and we are committed to ensuring that justice is achieved,” Abubakar stated.
