Mentoring the Next Generation: How experienced product managers can make a difference
The tech industry is one of the fastest-evolving fields globally, attracting individuals with diverse interests and skills. Anchored on providing solutions across various sectors, the industry requires a broad spectrum of technical and non-technical expertise. However, navigating this dynamic landscape can be challenging, especially for beginners and entry-level professionals. One of their most significant hurdles is finding experienced mentors who can provide personalized guidance and valuable insights. Addressing the mentorship gap in tech becomes crucial to supporting these young tech enthusiasts.
Bridging the Mentorship Gap
The challenge of limited mentorship is further compounded by the constraints of many online learning platforms in Nigeria. While numerous platforms offer introductory courses and tutorials, they often lack meaningful interaction with instructors and networking opportunities. Many learners find pre-recorded content and ineffective testing methods isolating and confusing. While these platforms serve a purpose, they must stay true to their primary goal: equipping trainees with comprehensive knowledge, a deep understanding, and practical skills.
Enter the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) Program
Launched in December 2023 by the Federal Ministry of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, the 3MTT program aims to train three million Nigerian technical talents by 2027, positioning Nigeria as a global tech talent hub. The first phase successfully selected 30,000 fellows from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, providing intensive training through self-paced online courses and hands-on applied learning sessions in partnership with over 120 organizations.
This collaborative model sets 3MTT apart from generic online platforms. In its second phase, 270,000 technical talents will be trained in three cohorts of 60,000, 90,000, and 120,000 trainees. The program focuses on 12 in-demand tech skills, including software development, product management, UI/UX design, data analysis, AI/machine learning, cybersecurity, cloud computing, animation, DevOps, game development, and quality assurance.
The Role of ITSkillsCenter in the 3MTT Program
Supporting this initiative is ITSkillsCenter, a premier training institute where individuals receive various tech training programs. The center offers:
● A 6-Month Intensive Onsite Bootcamp: Held at the Ogba, Ikeja campus in Lagos, this immersive program runs 24/7, ensuring rigorous training that thoroughly prepares students for job opportunities. This bootcamp costs N500,000.
● Regular Training Programs: These run three times a week for 1-3 months, offering flexibility for individuals with busy schedules.
Under this platform, experienced trainers like Diken David mentored 3MTT students in Product Management. His unique teaching style combined practical knowledge from various tech fields, fostering an engaging learning environment.
