Masari inaugurates Shari’a Commission to enhance peace, fight social vices
kastina governorof Katsina State Government has inaugurated the members of the Shari’a Commission to enhance peaceful coexistence, fight social vices and bolster socio-economic development.
Masari said on Thursday in Katsina that the members were appointed based on their impeccable characters and sound knowledge of Islam.
Represented by State Attorney-General, Hajia Asmau Mukhtar, the governor said that the importance of the commission can never be overemphasised.
The function of the commission, he said, was to regulate the core values of people’s lives by ensuring adherence to the principles of Islamic laws.
Masari said the commission has 10-members comprising Islamic scholars, traditional rulers and relevant officials, headed by the Grand Kadi.
The governor said that the members would advise him on the establishment of Shari’a Courts, application of the Penal Code and other relevant laws.
He added that they would also advise the government on the implementation of Islamic injunctions such as Zakat, Islamic markets, weight and measures and sighting of the new moon, among others.
Masari, therefore, urged the members to discharge their responsibilities with dedication and fear of Allah.
In his remarks, the state Chief Judge, Justice Musa Danladi-Abubakar, said that the commission would offer advice to the government on its policies and other things that were contrary to Islamic laws.
He said that it would also advise relevant government authorities to ensure that they were doing what they were expected.
The CJ also decried the high rate of divorce in the society, hence the need for the commission to find plausible solutions to reverse the ugly trend.
Danladi-Abubakar further tasked the commission on educating people on the proper use of social media, curbing drug abuse and other social vices.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the commission, who is also the Grand Kadi, Dr Muhammad Kabir, said that the members were appointed for a four-year tenure.
He promised that the commission would strive hard to ensure peaceful coexistence, vowing, ”we will perform our functions as expected.”
