While appreciating the awardees, the former military administrator of Lagos and Borno States noted, “The purpose of the awards such as this is to encourage the recipients to do even more in their areas of calling and also to let Nigerians and the world to know if you work hard enough, there is a reward for it.”

The Chairman used the opportunity to call on parents and every Nigerian to support the agency in its war against abuse of drugs, noting the right examples must be set for children.

“Each and everyone of you here knows we are in a dire strait as far as drug use is concerned- there is a drug scourge. We know for a fact that drugs have continued to destroy our youth, our families, our communities and on top of that, it is a propellant to terrorists, kidnappers, bandits all over the place. I would like to urge us all to support the war against drugs.

“80-90 percent of us here are parents, and as parents, we have responsibilities for our children, to bring our children up properly and to lay the correct examples. Any parent who loves drugs and sends the children to buy, already is laying his carpet for the child to follow his footsteps where the child tries what Papa or Mama is sending him to buy.

“We must begin by setting the right examples and we must pay much attention to our children like the old times. These days, parents are even afraid to go to bed at night until children have returned home and slept off, because they are afraid if they sleep before the children and the children come back they may slaughter them — this has happened.”

He therefore appealed to parents to pay more attention to their children, saying “We must all say no to drugs in our country. We need to recover Nigeria from the drug scourge.”

He advised Nigerians to make use of the NDLEA help line (080010203040) where there are responders who guide callers in English, Pidgin, Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa.

He added that the Agency has psychotherapists, psychologists, counselors and experts who are on standby 24/7 and are ready to provide guidance.

NDLEA arrests 150 drug trafficking suspects in Nasarawa State

Published

on

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), says it arrested 150 suspected drugs traffickers in Nasarawa State between July 2023 and June 2024.

Mr Peter Onche-Odaudu, State Commander of NDLEA in Nasarawa made the disclosure at the grand finale of a week-long event to mark the 2024 United Nations International Day Against Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, on Wednesday in Lafia.

Onche-Odaudu said that the suspects comprised of 144 males and six females, while 7,148.95 kilogrammes of illicit drugs were seized within the period under review.

According to the commander, the over seven tons of exhibit seized were made up of 7,037.2kg of Indian hemp, 0.011kg of Cocaine, 0.185kg of Methamphetamine and 111.53kg of sundry psychotropic substances.

“A very significant arrest and seizure is that of 4,037kg of Indian hemp in one fell swoop on Sunday, February 4, 2024.

“This remains the single highest seizure of drugs in the history of the drug war in Nasarawa State. The suspects arrested and the 40-footer truck seized are being prosecuted and forfeited respectively,” he said.

He said that the Command, through its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, sensitised no fewer than 46,802 persons – 27,033 males and 19,769 females in schools, communities, workplaces and motor parks across the state.

“As part of our rehabilitation programme, Eight male clients were taken into our facility, counseled and rehabilitated, 752 arrested suspects, who were obvious drug user, were given brief counselling interventions and released to their families,” he said.

He attributed the feat recorded by Command in the drug war in the state to the support from Governor Abdullahi Sule, his wife, Silifat Sule, as well as the encouragement from the Chairman/ Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, Retired Brig.-Gen. Muhammed Buba Marwa and other stakeholders in the state.

The NDLEA boss in the state also appreciated officers and men of the Command for their bravery and commitment to the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, which he said had yielded tremendous results in the state.

Onche-Odaudu, however, said that the Command was grappling with daunting challenges of lack of operational vehicles and other logistics.

“Also paucity of funds to run the Command and particularly to procure credible intelligence on the activities of drug dealers, from our confidential Informant or ‘whistleblowers’ in more common parlance, continue to be a cog in our wheel,” he said.

In her remarks, Hajiya Silifat Sule, wife of Nasarawa governor and Special Guest at the event, pledged her commitment and support to NDLEA in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Sule said as a mother, should could not fold her arms an watch the youth waste their lives to drugs.

The EFCC had filed charges against Cubana Chief Priest for allegedly abusing the naira, but the parties reached an agreement, which was adopted by the trial judge, Justice Kehinde Ogundare.

The defendant’s counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), commended the EFCC for their reasonable action in resolving the matter, and assured that his client was remorseful and promised to turn over a new leaf.

Driver bags life imprisonment for abducting, raping 10-year-old for three days

Published

Justice Rahman Oshodi of a Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced a 24-year-old commercial driver, Abdul Hudu, to life imprisonment for abducting and raping a 10-year-old girl (name withheld) for three days.

In her ruling, Justice Oshodi held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt the two-count charge of adduction and defilement against Hudu. The court sentenced the convict to two years imprisonment on count one while he was sentenced to life imprisonment on count two.

Oshodi, in his judgement, said that the facts of the case were distressing as Hudu cruelly abducted the 10-year-old survivor from the safety and care of her parents, for three agonising days.

“Her father could not eat and her mother cried incessantly, sick with worry over their missing child. The callous disregard you showed for a child’s well-being, and the emotional torment inflicted on her parents is shocking, and worse still, during those three days, you repeatedly defiled and sexually assaulted this vulnerable young girl at the tender age of 10.

“She experienced unthinkable trauma and violation at your hands which no child should ever have to endure and her innocence was stolen.

“Throughout this trial, you have shown no remorse; you lied blatantly in your testimony, denying the clear evidence against you, including your prior statement to the police. The web of falsehoods you spun to evade responsibility only compounded your culpability,” the judge ruled.

Oshodi held that it was a severe case of child abduction and defilement and the law viewed the offences as deserving of severe punishment to reflect society’s abhorrence to punish the offender and to protect other children from suffering a similar fate. He held that the fact that the convict was a first-time offender did not deflect the preceding.

“In light of the gravity of the offences, the aggravating features, and the absence of remorse, I sentence you as follows: On count one, the offence of abduction contrary to section 141, I sentence you to two years imprisonment and it shall commence on the date of your arrest, July 23, 2019, as shown in exhibit A-A1.

“On count two, the offence of defilement contrary to section 137, I sentence you to the mandatory sentence of life imprisonment and you shall also be registered as a sex offender. The sentences are to run concurrently, you will serve your custodial terms at the Maximum-Security Custodial Centre or wherever the Nigerian Correctional Service may direct you.”

The judge further said that through the convict’s wicked actions, he had brought the punishment upon himself.

“I hope you will use your time in custody to reflect and reform,” Oshodi said.

During the trial, the state lead counsel, Babajide Boye, called three witnesses: the survivor, her father, and one Ms. Oluchi Nwoke-Okoi, a nurse with the Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF) while the convict testified as the sole defence witness.

Certified copies of his extra-judicial statement dated July 23 2019 were received and marked as exhibit A-A1. The prosecutor had submitted that the convict committed the offences on June 30 2019 on Adekunle Street, Idi Araba, Mushin, Lagos. The prosecutor had told the court that the survivor was returning from an errand in the night when the convict hit her and put something on her face, causing her to lose consciousness and she woke up in his room.

According to the evidence before the court, the convict slept with the survivor multiple times over three days in different locations and after three days, he dropped her off near her house. She narrated the events to her father, who took her to the hospital and police station.

The prosecution told the court that as the convict could not be found, the father of the survivor placed a N50,000 bounty on the convict which subsequently led to his arrest.
