Man in court over alleged tricycle theft

A 36-year-old man, Abubakar Haruna, who allegedly stole a tricycle valued at N850,000 was on Tuesday arraigned in a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court.

Haruna, of no fixed address, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.

The prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, said that the defendant and two others still at large, committed the offences on Feb. 2, at about 6:00 a.m. at Ali Akilu Road, Kaduna.

Leo told the court that the defendant stole a tricycle valued at N850, 000 belonging to the complainant, Mansir Babanle.

He said the defendant was arrested with the tricycle at Badarawa, Kaduna, while trying to sell it.

He said that the offences contravened sections 57 and 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna, 2017.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Chief Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

He said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed.

Emmanuel also said the sureties must swear to an affidavit of means and submit four recent passports photograph to the court.

He said the sureties should also show evidence of tax payment to the Kaduna State government.

Emmanuel adjourned the case until March 10, for hearing.
