Man in court over alleged manslaughter

A 30-year-old man, Oluwasegun Ajidahun, who allegedly drove recklessly and caused the death of a motorcycle rider, on Monday appeared in an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Ajidahun, whose address was not provided, is facing a three-count charge bordering on reckless driving and manslaughter.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Insp. Doney Raphael, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Jan. 4, at 1.28 p.m., on Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos.

Raphael said that the defendant drove a Nissan Altima Saloon car against traffic, and in a reckless manner, caused the death of a motorcycle rider and injured his passenger.

“Ajidahun knocked down Mr Elvis Amugwo, 27, now deceased, and caused severe injury on Ekene Iyadi,” the prosecutor said.

He said that the offences contravened sections 19, 20 and 30 (1), of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2012.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.G. Oghre, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Oghre said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of three years tax payments to Lagos State Government for the last three years.

She adjourned the case until March 16, for further mention.
