Man, family threatened over Sasa riots of 2021

A man, Victor Onwe and his family members were attacked by some Yoruba hoodlums over the killings which resulted during the series of riots and fights between Yoruba and Hausa people in Sasa in 2021.

According to information gleaned from neighbours and friends, Victor used to live with his sister, Mrs. Allwell Adeniji before the Sasa riots and was generally known to be a peaceful and gentle person. He was with the sister for about seven months before he left for his own place.

However, it was not until 13th February, 2021 that Victor called his sister, Mrs. Allwell to intimate her that he was involved in the Sasa riots of the previous day. He has not been seen or heard of since then.

The troubles started when some supposed Yoruba thugs came to the sister, Mrs. Allwell’s workplace to confront and subsequently attacked her on the grounds that her brother allegedly sided with the Hausa youths during the 2021 Sasa fights between Hausa and Yoruba tribes. The hoodlums brought out machetes and attempted to cut her, while shouting, “Your brother and his Hausa tribe people killed our Yoruba brothers, wives and children” and “that all of them from the Northern part of Nigeria will die…”  If not for her colleagues who smuggled her out through a backdoor, she probably would have been hacked to death.

According to Mrs. All well, she wrongly assumed the attack at her office in Bodija was all that was to the matter until the assailants came again on 30th March this year. This time, they came to her residence, firing their guns into the air all the while yelling, “You and your family have nowhere to hide, we have network everywhere…” Her only saving grace was that she travelled with her family for a social function. The hoodlums, however, left their calling card by destroying her properties. Her neighbours who barely escaped with their lives recounted their ordeal.

According to Mrs. Allwell and her family, they sleep in different hotels for the fear of being attacked by these thugs since that day.
