Man crashes car, sustains injuries after police chase in Osogbo

A man, identified as Dare, has been hospitalised in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, after he sustained varying degrees of injuries when he ran his car into a building in the early hours of Sunday, December 5, 2021

The incident, according to a video posted by Oluwasegun Idowu, the spokesperson of Osun Police Watch, a police watchdog organisation and obtained by Newsmen occurred after the victim was chased by police operatives attached to the Obelawo Police Station, Osogbo.

Idowu, who is a member of the Osun State judicial panel on police brutality, stated that though the victim claimed that the police officers responsible for his predicament assured him that they will repair his car and pay for his hospital bills, the matter has been reported to the Police Complaint Response Unit (PCRU).

The Osun Police Watch spokesperson added that they had to raise the alarm because another person may suffer unjustly and life may even be lost just as it happened to Kabiru Babai on Friday in Ota-Efun.

While commending the PCRU for rising up to the occasion, the organisation demanded that the police personnel responsible for the accident be identified and disciplined.

They requested that the serving senior police officer in charge of the station, CSP Omoyele, be transferred out of the state because he was a member of the disbanded Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS).

Idowu, who insisted that the law should take its full course, also called on citizens not to negotiate with rogue officers of the Nigerian police when issues like this occur.

Calls put across to the spokesperson of the Osun State Police Command, Yemisi Opalola, at the time of filing this report were not responded to.

Recall that on Friday, a borehole rig operator, Kabiru Babai, died as a result of gunshot to the chest by Sergeant Moses Samuel.

The Osun Command has since arrested the culprit and promised that justice would be served in the matter.

The arrest was however effected after the Osun State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, ordered the police to fish out the killer of the rig operator.
