Man charged for alleged theft of N1.7m from church

A 69-year-old  man, Charles Aremu, was on Thursday docked in an Iyaganku Magistrates’ court in Ibadan for allegedly stealing N1.7million from the Celestial Church of Christ.

Aremu, is charged with obtaining money under false pretences and theft.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Insp Oladejo Balogun, told the court that the defendant committed the offence in January, 2023, at the church.

Balogun said that the defendant obtained the sum of N1.7million  from the church to buy anointment but failed to do so.

He said the defendant  converted the money to  personal use.

He said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 419 and 390(9) of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The Magistrate, Mrs Olasinmibo Sanusi-Zubair, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N700,000 with two reliable sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case until Sept. 23, for hearing.
