Man arrested for shooting friend after heated argument in Abuja

A 33-year-old man, Obinna Nwigwe, has been arrested by the FCT Police Command for allegedly shooting his friend, Andrew Philemon, during a heated argument at the Najob Guest House in Bwari.

SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, labelling it a disturbing case of violent crime.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on 26 December 2024, when police officers responded to a distress call reporting gunfire at the guest house. Upon arrival, they found 29-year-old Philemon severely injured from a gunshot wound. Nwigwe, armed with a pump-action rifle, claimed the shooting was in self-defence after the argument had escalated.

“Police officers acted swiftly, arresting Obinna Nwigwe at the scene. A subsequent search of his residence revealed a shocking arsenal of weapons,” Adeh said.

The police discovered five Dane guns, one English-made single-barrel gun, an AK-47 magazine containing 29 rounds of live ammunition, four live cartridges, 17 spent cartridges, a bow with arrows, several knives, a sword-stick, a toy gun, a taser, a bulletproof jacket, and numerous sets of police uniforms and boots.

Philemon is currently receiving medical treatment at the National Hospital in Abuja, while Nwigwe remains in custody as investigations continue.

The FCT Police Command reiterated its commitment to combatting violent crime and ensuring the safety of the public.

“This case underscores the importance of vigilance and the dangers associated with illegal firearm possession. The suspect will face the full force of the law,” SP Adeh stated.

Authorities have urged residents to report any suspicious activities to assist in the fight against crime.

The FCT Police Commissioner, Tunji Disu, emphasised the role of community involvement in maintaining security.

“The safety and security of our community depend on the active participation of all citizens. We encourage everyone to report suspicious activities to the police,” Disu said.

These efforts reflect the ongoing commitment of the FCT Police Command to protect lives, dismantle criminal networks, and ensure public safety across the Federal Capital Territory.
