Man arraigned for allegedly failing to produce brother

A 27-year-man, Innocent Chikwule, was on Tuesday arraigned in Lagos for allegedly failing to produce his brother for whom he stood as surety.

The police charged Chikwule, whose address was not provided, with perverting the course of justice.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court.

The prosecutor, Insp Sunday Bassey, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Dec. 21, 2022 at Ogudu Police Station.

Bassey alleged that Chikwule stood as surety for his older brother, Chukwudi, suspected to be involved in stealing.

The prosecutor said that the defendant failed to produce the suspect on Dec. 24, 2022 and other subsequent dates when he was needed at the police station.

Bassey said that the alleged offence contravened Section 97 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Tanimola, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case until Feb. 13 for hearing.
