A 39-year-old man, Taiwo Adedokun, on Thursday appeared before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly defrauding a man of over N5.1 million.
Adedokun, whose address was not provided, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, fraud and stealing.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, ASP Olakunle Shonibare, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Oct. 18, 2021, at the Postal Office Salon in Abeokuta.
Shonibare said the defendant, an officer of the Nigerian Postal Service Sapon in Abeokuta, fraudulently collected money for postal service and a bag containing clothing materials and foodstuff from the complainant, Mr. Olanrewaju Adejimi.
He said the defendant, collected the sum of N101, 000 in pretext to assist the complainant in posting the items, worth N5 million to his brother’s wife in Dublin, Republic of Ireland.
He also said that the defendant refused to give the complainant the tracking number of the items and failed to deliver them to the agreed destination.
He said that the defendant converted both the money for the postal and the bag of items to his personal use.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections, 516, 390(9) and 390(2) of the Criminal Law of Ogun, 2006.
The Magistrate, Mrs. Olajumoke Somefun, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She ordered that the sureties must provide evidence of tax payments to the Ogun government.
She, thereafter, adjourned the case until May 27 for further hearing.
