Man, 35, jailed 10 months for impersonation
A Kaduna Magistrate Court, on Thursday, sentenced a 35-year old man, Jibrin Usman, to 10 months imprisonment for impersonating as police officer.
Usman, who lives in Kinkinau, Kaduna, was tried for impersonation and intimidation.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, sentenced Usman after he pleaded guilty to the charge, and begged the court for leniency.
“Please forgive me, my lord, I plead for mercy, sir. I will not commit any crime again,” Usman said.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that Usman paraded himself as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in the state for more than one year.
Leo said that luck ran out of the convict when a member of a vigilance group on duty in the community demanded proper identification from him.
“He was unable to produce a valid identify card, so the vigilance group member invited a police officer serving in the state to ascertain the convict’s claim.
“This Led to his arrest, he confessed to have once worked as a security officer before resigning. He also confessed that he never enrolled in the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.
Leo said that the offence contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
Counsel to the convict, Aisha Nasir, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy stating that Usman did not dupe anyone during the period of the impersonation.
