LWC warns residents against consumption of unsafe water
The Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) on Thursday warned residents to desist from consumption of unsafe water following the growing cholera outbreak in the country.
The Director-General, LWC, Mr Muminu Badmus, gave the warning in a statement made available to newsmen in Lagos.
“LWC warns residents against consumption of unsafe and untreated water. This follows the increasing cases of cholera outbreak in the country,” he said.
Badmus said that it was essential to educate the general public on the real causes of cholera outbreak, which was consumption of untreated and unsafe water supply and lack of basic sanitation facility.
“There is need to educate the general public on the need for basic sanitation and hygiene amongst others.
“LWC however appeals to Lagos residents to always patronise the public water supply and desist from consumption of unsafe water supply from sources that cannot be guaranteed.
“Drinking polluted groundwater or contaminated water can cause many types of diseases, which include cholera, diarrhea and other serious illnesses such as Guinea worm, Typhoid, Dysentery, amongst others.
“Public water supply is good for human consumption because it is treated, safe and free from germs and it conforms to World Health Organisation’s (WHO) standard,” the LWC Director-General said.
He said that water quality monitoring team had been constituted and was presently embarking on holistic awareness campaign and monitor water quality from taps in residence and public water taps.
“This is in order to ascertain quality service delivery to customers and ensure residents are served with good quality water,” he said.
