LP outwits PDP again as principal officers emerge in Abia Assembly

New principal officers have been elected in the Abia State House of Assembly.

The Speaker of the House, Emmanuel Emeruwa who announced the names of new principal officers during Friday’s sitting, named Uchenna Okoro representing Arochukwu constituency, as the Majority Leader.

This was done after the member representing Osisioma Ngwa North, Iheanacho Nwaogu and Ahuama Fyne of Osisioma Ngwa South constituency, both of Young Progressives Party, YPP and Akaliro Anderson of the All Progressives Congress APC, aligned with the ten members of the Labour Party to form the required majority in the house.

Speaker of the Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa who announced the names of the new principal officers, informed the members of the house that with the understanding reached between the other two political parties, it was pertinent to announce the house leadership.

He announced Destiny Nwagwu Aba North State constituency as Deputy Majority leader, Emeka Obioma Umuahia South as Chief Whip and Iheanacho Nwaogu Osisioma Ngwa North constituency as Deputy Chief Whip.

There was no announcement for a Minority Leader.

The speaker went further to read the letter from the Executive Governor informing the House of the list of nineteen commissioner designates for screening and approval.

He further set up an adhoc committee led by Chinasa Anthony, member Representing Umuahia Central to screen the Commissioner nominees before for screening and approval.

But the position of the Minority Leader was not announced by the House, even when the PDP still had ten elected members.

Of the principal offices announced, the PDP which is the major opposition party in the State did not occupy anyone, raising eyebrows about the relevance of the party in the business of the House, even as an opposition party.

Apart from this, PDP which has eleven members, including many senior members, could not strike a deal with the three House members of APC and YPP extraction.

Rather, the ruling party, LP had its way again by lobbying the YPP and APC legislators to round up its control of the 8th Abia House of Assembly.

With the development, Abia State House is in firm control of LP.
