Local Government agricultural personnel in Osun State have been challenged to take the lead as change agents for enhanced agricultural productivity and sustainable agricultural development, even in the post-COVID-19 era in the State.

Chairman, Osun Local Government Service Commission (LGSC), Elder Tunde Adedeji gave the charge, on Tuesday, in Osogbo at the flag-off of a three-day workshop designed to enhance the capacity of agricultural personnel in the local government areas of the State.

While alerting the workshop participants that the era of going cap in hand to Abuja for monthly allocation is gone, the LGSC boss asserted that the sure way to go, for sustainable development to continue, is the way of agriculture.         Elder Adedeji reminisced that when Chief Obafemi Awolowo was the Premier in the then Western Region of Nigeria, agriculture was the mainstay of the economy with which monumental achievements were recorded.

He said, “Don’t allow anybody to stop you from practicing what you know how to do; Set up pilot schemes in your various local governments; Make your local government ready to showcase your area of comparative advantage in agriculture- it is achievable.”

Earlier in his address of welcome, the Coordinating Director in the Commission, Prince Lekan Babalola had earlier lauded the Agricultural Officers cadre in the local government service for always being innovative and entrepreneurial in their duties, vouching that if given the necessary impetus, they can make a lot of difference in boosting internally revenue generation in the various council areas.

Earlier in his preview of the workshop content, the leading resource person, Mr. Shola Ashiru had disclosed that the workshop had been packaged to enhance the productivity of participants in order to help them expand their revenue base.
