Let’s secure Osun, Adeleke charges newly trained Amotekun corps

By Jeleel Olawale

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has called on the newly trained Amotekun corps to play a crucial role in safeguarding the state and making it a model for security in Nigeria.

Speaking at the passing-out parade of the latest recruits at the NYSC orientation camp in Ede on Friday, Adeleke reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing security through a well-equipped and properly structured security outfit.

“Our government is determined to ensure the safety of our dear state. To achieve this, we have strengthened the personnel framework and enhanced the capacity of our security services. We appointed new leadership with extensive experience in security operations and law enforcement,” he stated.

He further outlined the steps taken to improve Amotekun’s effectiveness:

“We have provided a well-equipped operational headquarters to serve as a coordination hub. The new leadership has devised a comprehensive reform agenda, which our administration is actively implementing. These reforms include increasing personnel strength, advancing training in law enforcement, and improving operational equipment and logistics. The full execution of these plans will bolster Amotekun’s ability to carry out its mandate effectively.”

The governor expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far, noting that the newly trained officers are now fully prepared for operational duties.

“This is the first batch of recruits, and more training sessions will follow. As part of our commitment to securing lives and property, I assure both the leadership and personnel of Amotekun that our administration remains dedicated to fully executing these upgrades. We will equip you with the necessary resources to carry out your duties effectively,” Adeleke affirmed.

He also highlighted the legal backing now enjoyed by Amotekun, stating that recent amendments to its governing laws had removed previous shortcomings.

“With the revised legal framework, the service now has a solid foundation within the state’s security structure. Additionally, Amotekun will be included as a beneficiary in the planned security trust fund. Once the fund is operational, the service will have access to logistical support and other essential resources,” he added.

As a security professional himself, Adeleke assured the corps that their needs—including vehicles, motorbikes, and other operational tools—would be addressed promptly. He urged the recruits to remain committed to their duty and uphold the highest ethical standards.

“You must be dedicated crime-fighters, demonstrating discipline and integrity. Avoid corruption and any conduct that contradicts the law. You are expected to be exemplary ambassadors of this service in all your operations,” he advised.

He also charged the Amotekun leadership with ensuring the continued implementation of reforms, increasing the corps’ presence across the state, and maintaining internal discipline.

“The leadership must ensure that the service remains visible across all parts of the state. Additionally, internal structures must be reviewed, and any personnel acting against the service’s mandate should be removed,” he stressed.

Governor Adeleke underscored the need for strong collaboration among security agencies, calling on Amotekun to work closely with the police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other law enforcement bodies.

“All security agencies share the same objective—a safer Osun State. Close coordination between Amotekun and other security outfits is essential in achieving this goal,” he concluded.
