LASWA GM advocates gender inclusion to enhance organisational growth
Under the leadership of General Manager Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has made remarkable strides in advancing gender equality within the organisation.
Before Mr Emmanuel assumed office, LASWA employed only four women. This number has since increased to 22, with many now occupying managerial positions—demonstrating a conscious commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion within Lagos’ water transport sector.
A particularly noteworthy aspect of this initiative is the intentional recruitment of young women into the LASWA Marine Guards Corps, a safety unit previously composed entirely of men.
This move has challenged conventional gender roles while reaffirming LASWA’s dedication to ensuring equal opportunities across all operational areas. The inclusion of women in diverse roles has significantly improved service delivery, enhanced operational efficiency, and contributed to the agency’s overall growth.
Beyond increasing female representation, LASWA has implemented proactive measures to create a safe and respectful work environment for all employees.
In February 2025, in collaboration with the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), LASWA organised a sensitisation session aimed at preventing workplace harassment and domestic abuse. This initiative encouraged staff to report any form of misconduct and uphold the principles of dignity and mutual respect in the workplace.
LASWA’s gender inclusion efforts align with wider industry trends advocating balanced representation and diversity in leadership.
By actively promoting equality and fostering an inclusive work culture, General Manager Oluwadamilola Emmanuel has not only enriched the organisation’s internal structure but has also set a compelling example for other agencies in Lagos and beyond.
His commitment to gender empowerment positions him as a progressive and responsive leader, exceeding both global and national expectations on gender equality. This proactive approach underscores his dedication to driving meaningful social change within Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
