LASU VC urges athletes to use competition for unity, progress

The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has called on student-athletes participating in the 11th All Africa University Games to leverage the event not only for competition but also for building bonds and fostering unity across the continent.
Speaking at the opening ceremony held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on September 21, 2024, Professor Olatunji-Bello emphasised the importance of friendship and collaboration among participants.
“Use this year’s competition to bond, unite, and move Africa forward,” she stated, highlighting the games as an opportunity to break barriers and change narratives.
In her address, she encouraged the athletes to showcase their skills while demonstrating sportsmanship, regardless of the outcomes.
“The game is about participation as much as it is about winning. Compete well, and if you don’t get the medals, show great sportsmanship,” she noted.
The opening ceremony, attended by representatives from the Nigerian Ministry of Sports and numerous universities across Africa, featured cultural performances, a march past, and the lighting of the games torch.
Professor Olatunji-Bello also expressed gratitude to the Lagos State government for its support in hosting the event.
Professor Folashade Ogunsola, Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, echoed her counterpart’s sentiments, urging athletes to form lasting friendships that transcend the competition. “Compete, excel, and use these games to unite,” she affirmed.
President of the Nigeria University Games (NUGA), Engr. Bawa Mohammed, encouraged participants to view sports as a vital profession for their future.
“This competition has all the indices of success. The games are for the future of Africa,” he remarked.
President of the Federation Africain Du Sport Universitaire (FASU), Dr. Ashram Sobhy, expressed confidence in the integrity and competitiveness of the games, stating, “I expect competitive games and great collaboration among the athletes.”
The festivities included ceremonial oaths taken by officials and athletes, committing to uphold the spirit of the games.
The closing ceremony is scheduled for September 29, 2024, at the LASU Sports and Recreation Centre, promising a celebration of African unity and sporting excellence.
