The Lagos State Government (LASG) as part of its effort to address sexual and domestic violence in the State, has commenced training of paramilitary officers on response action to such incidents.
The State this month has trained no fewer than 100 paramilitary officers, drawn from the Lagos Neighbourhood and Safety Corps, Kick Against Indiscipline, Peace Corps, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, on state laws, policies, and institutions in order to combat gender-based and other related violence in the state.
In a statement to the development released on Tuesday, spokesperson for the the Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Adejoke Ladenegan-Oginni, quoted the Executive Secretary of the agency, Mrs Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, as saying the training would allow the officers to effectively discharge their duties as first responders in fighting the crimes in the state.
The training, which took place on March 1, 2024, had stakeholders, including the Deputy State Commandant (Training and Operations), Amb Patriot Onitolo, representative of the Peace Corps; LNSC Training Officer, Mr. Adetiloye James; Assistant Chief Law Enforcement Environmental Sanitation Officer (Head of Training Department), Eniola Micheal; Kai; and the Superintendent of Corp. NSCDC, Mr. Idris Abimbola.
Speaking during her address, Vivour-Adeniyi said that the crux of the training was to equip the officers with the right tools and knowledge to support the fight against SGBV in the state.
“Sexual and gender-based violence is a globally pervasive human rights violation, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared zero tolerance for all forms of this menace,” she said.
The Lagos Coordinator of the Child Protection Network, Mrs Ronke Oyelakin, highlighted the various forms of abuse, preventive measures, and techniques of psychological first aid while engaging the officers in a role-play to further the message.
