The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA), has called on residents to stay alert and actively adhere to preventive measures against the spread of HIV and AIDS in the state.
Chief Executive Officer of LSACA, Dr Folakemi Animashaun, underscored the importance of collective action in combating the HIV epidemic during a virtual interview.
She stressed that individuals must take responsibility for both their own health and that of the wider community.
According to Dr Animashaun, “HIV remains a major public health concern, and prevention is our strongest defence. We urge all Lagos residents to adopt safe practices, undergo regular testing, and seek medical support when necessary. Ending HIV transmission requires a united front, and together, we can achieve an HIV-free generation.”
She advised residents to embrace preventive measures, including: Practising safe sex; Avoiding the sharing of sharp objects such as needles and blades; Undergoing regular HIV testing for early detection and management; Seeking immediate medical attention when needed.
Dr Animashaun stressed the need for increased awareness efforts focusing on prevention, treatment, and shared responsibility. She stated that education is key in ensuring that individuals understand how the virus is transmitted and how to protect themselves.
“We urge all Lagos residents to make informed choices, get tested regularly, and seek medical support when required. The responsibility of curbing HIV transmission does not lie solely with the government and health institutions but with every citizen playing an active role in staying informed and protected,” she added.
She reaffirmed LSACA’s commitment to the Health and Environment Mandate of the THEMES Plus Agenda, noting that the agency has remained at the forefront of HIV & AIDS control efforts. These include public sensitisation campaigns and free screening and counselling services available across the state.
“As an agency, we are dedicated to educating the public and rolling out health initiatives that align with our mission. We remain resolute in our commitment to this cause and will continue working towards a healthier and safer Lagos for all.”
Dr Animashaun also reiterated that HIV testing and counselling services remain free at all designated healthcare facilities in the state, reflecting the government’s dedication to providing accessible and affordable healthcare, particularly in the fight against HIV.
She expressed confidence that through unity and proactive engagement, Lagos can move closer to achieving an HIV-free generation, pledging that LSACA will continue its public education and health promotion efforts to strengthen HIV management and prevention across the state.
