Largest LNG-powered vessel berths at Lekki Port

Lagos has continued to receive visitors on its waterways as the state welcomed the largest LNG-powered vessel.

This comes barely a week after the Lekki Port, Nigeria’s deepest seaport, received the largest container ship to call in Nigerian port.

The vessel, named CMA CGM Scandola, can carry 14,000 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) of containerised imports and is scheduled to arrive at Lekki Port on Monday, January 29, 2023

CMA CGM SCANDOLA has a length overall of 366 meters and a width of 51 meters.

The vessel, which ranks amongst the largest vessels to be calling in West Africa, will continue its voyage and sail to Abidjan, Côte d’lvoire after departing Nigeria.

Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Board Chairman, Lekki Port LFTZ Enterprise Limited, Mr. Biodun Dabiri, Director, Lekki Port, Alhaji Bode Oyedele, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Ms. Yan Yuqing were some of the dignitaries present to witness the arrival  of the vessel at the Lekki Freeport Terminal, Lekki Port, Ibeju Lekki.

Speaking, Sanwo-Olu said the vessel made history by being the first to sail to West Africa, arriving in Tema, Ghana before making its call at the Lekki Port in Lagos, Nigeria

In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Governor wrote, “It is nice to start off the week with some great news today; the LNG-powered CMA CGM SCANDOLA, a 14,812 TEUs container vessel, has made history by berthing at the Lekki Deep Sea Port-the most modern and deepest seaport in Nigeria.

“The CMA CGM SCANDOLA is the first LNG-powered container vessel to sail to West Africa, arriving in Tema before making its mark at Lekki Port.

“It is important to note that the Lekki Deep Sea Port is the only port in Nigeria with the facilities to receive such large container vessels.

“I’m proud of the Lekki Deep Sea Port, Lekki Freeport Terminal, and CMA CGM for elevating Nigeria’s maritime industry. The key to economic prosperity lies within the Lekki economic zone,” he said.
