Lagos train transports 2m passengers in 1 year period

The Lagos Rail Mass Transit’s Blue Line has transported approximately two million passengers over the past year. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), shared this information in a statement released on Wednesday by LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Kolawole Ojelabi.

The Blue Line, which was inaugurated by former President Muhammadu Buhari on January 23, 2023, began passenger operations on September 4, 2023, following extensive test runs. According to Akinajo, the electrically-powered Blue Line is the first of its kind in West Africa.

Akinajo expressed the Lagos State Government’s satisfaction with the rail line’s safety record. “We have successfully realized the vision of the Governor for an integrated, multi-modal transport system,” she said. “This milestone allows us to reflect on the profound impact this transformative project has had on Lagos and its residents.”

She noted that the Blue Line connects residents from Marina to Mile 2, offering a dependable and efficient transportation option. The system has been well-received by a diverse group of commuters, including white-collar workers, entrepreneurs, students, and tourists, and has contributed to the state’s economic growth.

Akinajo highlighted that the Blue Line has served around two million passengers with minimal disruptions. In August 2024, the frequency of trips was increased from 54 to 72 per day, cutting travel time between Marina and Mile 2 from approximately 30 minutes to 18 minutes.

The success of the Blue Line has attracted international interest and potential investors for future rail infrastructure projects in Lagos. Akinajo emphasized that this achievement underscores the commitment to providing world-class transportation solutions. She also acknowledged the support of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration, partners, and the people of Lagos, reaffirming LAMATA’s dedication to expanding its rail network and enhancing the overall transport experience.
