Lagos set to reintroduce monthly environmental sanitation exercise

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to reintroduce the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the state.

According to a 21-second clip shared on the Lagos State Environmental Update page on X, the State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed that the reintroduction has been approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the State Executive Council.

“The Lagos governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the state executive council have approved the re-introduction of the monthly sanitation,” Wahab said in Yoruba.

“The governor will announce it officially for the exercise to commence this month.”

The monthly environmental sanitation exercise was previously stopped in 2016, with the then Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, citing the state’s exponential growth and environmental problems as reasons for the cancellation.

However, the recent flooding in parts of Lagos due to incessant rain may have prompted the government to reconsider the exercise.

The reintroduction of the monthly sanitation exercise is aimed at addressing the environmental challenges facing the state and promoting a cleaner and healthier environment for residents.

The government is expected to make an official announcement soon, with the exercise set to commence in July.
