Lagos set to ban single-use plastics, sachet water by Jan 2025

The Lagos State Government has announced a comprehensive ban on the circulation of single-use plastics and sachet water, effective January 2025.

This decision was confirmed during a stakeholders’ workshop focused on implementing the ban on Styrofoam and single-use plastics (SUPs) for packaging.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasised that this initiative is part of broader efforts to develop policy guidelines for the sustainable management of plastic waste and to promote a healthier environment.

“This ban is essential to combat the increasing prevalence of plastic waste and its negative impact on our environment,” Wahab stated.

Earlier in January 2024, the government prohibited the use of Styrofoam across all government establishments as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability. Stakeholders in the sector, however, have called for a phased implementation of the new ban.

They argue that such an approach would allow businesses to adapt more effectively amidst the current economic challenges.

Chairperson of the Association for Table Water Producers of Nigeria (ATWAP), Mosaku Ololade, expressed the association’s readiness to collaborate with the government.

“We urge the government to implement the ban in phases to allow our members ample opportunity for compliance,” he said, highlighting the need for additional support and infrastructure to facilitate the transition.

The Lagos State Government’s decision is expected to significantly impact the production and consumption of single-use plastics, marking a significant step towards enhancing environmental sustainability in the region.
