Lagos reintroduces 25% fare discount on public transport

By Sodiq Adelakun

The Lagos State Government has reintroduced a 25 percent fare discount on all regulated transportation modes, including buses, ferries, and train services, to alleviate economic hardship. This move is part of the broader “Eko Cares” initiative, which includes transportation fare reductions and medical assistance.

According to the government, “It is all part of Eko Cares, the umbrella programme of the state government’s interventions to cushion the effects of economic hardship.”

The statement added that the fare discount is one of the measures to ease the financial burden on residents.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) is expected to provide further details on how the discount will be implemented. The government has periodically adjusted fare discounts on regulated transport services in response to economic challenges faced by residents.

In the past, the government introduced a 50 percent fare rebate in August 2023, which was later reduced to 25 percent in November 2023. The discount was reinstated in February 2024 but suspended on June 3, 2024. Additionally, a 25 percent fare reduction was introduced for off-peak hours on the Blue Line metro rail in August 2024.
