Lagos pays over N1.5bn in compensation to landowners for demolished properties
…Sanwo-Olu reaffirms commitment to inclusive growth, hails partnership with citizens

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, disbursed over N1.5 billion in compensation to more than 150 beneficiaries whose properties were acquired for critical public infrastructure projects across the state.
The formal presentation of the cheques took place at the State House in Ikeja, on Tuesday, where Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to transforming Lagos into a city of opportunity while ensuring that its progress benefits all residents, including those whose properties were impacted by government development initiatives.
“The payment of these compensations is not just a financial transaction; it is a testament to our administration’s promise to be fair, transparent, and inclusive.
“Every land that was acquired was for a greater purpose — to lay the foundation for critical infrastructure that will serve the people of Lagos for generations to come,” said Governor Sanwo-Olu.
Among the projects financed by these land acquisitions are the Pen Cinema and Agege Right of Way, LAMATA Bus Terminal in Abule Egba, LAMATA Corridors in Oja Oba, Abule Egba, and Maryland, as well as the expansive Orile-Badagry Road and the Oyingbo Ultra Modern Bus Terminal.
Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted that the compensation paid was not just for land, but for the social progress these acquisitions would bring to the state.
”These projects are more than just concrete and steel. They are the bedrock of a prosperous Lagos, where healthcare, education, transportation, and safety all come together to create a better future for all. We are building a Lagos where every citizen, whether business owner or resident, benefits from the state’s growth,” he said.
The governor also praised the beneficiaries for their cooperation, emphasizing that their support was crucial in the realisation of the state’s infrastructure plans.
“This compensation is a reflection of our respect for the sacrifices you have made in contributing to the development of this state. It is a mark of our appreciation, and I hope it provides the means for new opportunities for you and your families,” he added.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Tinuola Adeshagba-Alegbe from Oja-Oba, expressed her gratitude to the Lagos State Government for the unexpected compensation.
“My father owned three shops here, and we are truly grateful to the government for recognizing our contribution to Lagos’ development,” she said.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Land Bureau, Mr. Kamar Olowoshago, commended both the governor and the landowners for their collaborative approach to the compensation process.
“This is a true partnership between the citizens and the government. It is not just about acquiring land for infrastructure, but ensuring that those whose properties were taken are adequately rewarded. This is how we build a city that works for everyone,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu reiterated the state’s commitment to inclusive development and continued engagement with all stakeholders in the ongoing transformation of Lagos. “We will not stop here,” he assured.
