Lagos partners Swedish firms to transform waste into energy

In a bid to address the pressing issue of waste management in Lagos State, the government has announced its intention to collaborate with Swedish organisations to convert solid and liquid waste into energy.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasised the state’s commitment to paying special attention to waste management.

“The quest to make good use of the high solid waste generated in Lagos State got another boost on Tuesday as the state expressed readiness to partner with some Swedish organisations on how to turn both solid waste and liquid waste into energy across the metropolis,” he said.

Lagos generates up to 14,000 tonnes of waste daily, and adopting waste-to-energy projects is crucial to drive sustainability and reduce carbon emissions.

“We will continue to pay special attention to waste management because waste is not waste, but one of the best resources everywhere,” Wahab added.

The Head of the delegation, representative of the Consul of Sweden and Business Promotion Officer at the Swedish Embassy in Abuja, Ms. Sara Ibru, acknowledged Lagos’s proactive governance and affirmed that Swedish organisations are ready to collaborate with the state to convert solid and liquid waste into valuable resources.
