Lagos orders immediate suspension of work on 100 waterfront structures

The Lagos State Government has issued several stop-work orders and contravention notices to developers found breaching established regulations concerning waterfront setbacks.
This move comes in the wake of a recent inspection of ongoing construction across multiple estates, including Megamound Estate near Lekki County, Victoria Crest III & IV, Oral Estate, and Pine Estate along Orchid Road. During the inspection, a number of buildings were identified as having encroached upon designated waterfront buffer zones.
In a statement released on Sunday, the State Commissioner for the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure Development (MWID), Ekundayo Alebiosu, underscored the necessity of complying with waterfront development laws and securing appropriate approvals before initiating any construction near the state’s waterfronts.
Alebiosu warned that further inspections would lead to a firm crackdown on non-compliant developers, urging them to halt ongoing works immediately or risk facing legal repercussions.
“We are determined to safeguard the integrity of our waterfront corridors and to ensure that every development aligns with the state’s planning and environmental standards,” he stated.
He also appealed to those involved in the infractions to withdraw from further encroachment, making it clear that continued violations would attract stringent sanctions.
