Lagos marks World Humanitarian Day with road walk

…Advocates women empowerment

Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation on Monday commemorated the 2024 World Humanitarian Day with a road walk awareness campaign, emphasizing the importance of women empowerment and support for vulnerable families.

The event, held in Ikeja, brought together officials from the ministry, Non-Governmental Organisations, and representatives from registered women-focused groups.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Bolaji Dada, stressed the need for unity in the face of challenges, saying, “Today, we gather to observe World Humanitarian Day. We stand here in solidarity with those who need it most. I’m reminded constantly that people across the globe confront hardships ranging from conflict and displacement to poverty and inequality. These challenges test the very fabric of our society.”

Dada highlighted that women make up the majority of those living in poverty and are often the first to bear the brunt of crises.

“Poverty alleviation and empowerment of women are not just policies. They are humanitarian imperatives as women make up the majority of people living in poverty, and often the first to bear the brunt of crisis.

“Their voices, experiences and needs must be at the forefront of our interventions. When we invest in women, we uplift entire communities, paving the way for a more equitable and just society,” she added.

The ministry has registered 257 women-focused NGOs and certified 140 NGOs, providing grants to numerous organisations. Dada called on the government, organisations, and individuals to prioritise human dignity above all else.

“Humanitarian actions are not just the responsibility of a select few. It rests in our hands. Each small act of kindness, every gesture of support, and any effort to raise awareness can ignite hope and change lives. Let us stand firm in our commitment to foster environments where women, children, and vulnerable individuals can thrive.”She said.

The event included a walk from Shoprite Bus stop Alausa to the Lagos State House of Assembly ground and back to the Secretariat Alausa, promoting awareness and solidarity for women’s empowerment and humanitarian causes.
