Lagos: Man arraigned for hitting policeman with his vehicle

34-year-old man, Olumide Oseni, who allegedly hit a police officer on duty with his vehicle, was on Monday brought to an Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Mr Oseni, whose residential address was not provided, is standing trial on a three-count charge of assault, attempt to commit murder and breach of the peace.

The prosecutor, ASP Benedict Aigbokhan, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on November 6, at 12:20 p.m., at Ijegun – Isheri Oshun Road, Lagos.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by driving one-way with his Toyota Camry, marked JJJ 648 HH.

Mr Aigbokhan said the defendant refused to stop when signalled to do so by one Insp Bassey Ofem, who was on duty.

“The defendant refused to obey traffic rules, rather hit Insp Ofem with his vehicle.

“The police officer tried to dodge the vehicle but sustained injury on his right leg,” Mr Aigbokhan said.

The prosecutor said that the defendant attempted to murder the officer, despite seeing the officer on police uniform with his riffle.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 56 (a), 168(d) and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to all the three counts.

The Magistrate, K. A. Ariyo, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government. The magistrate adjourned the case until November 28 for mention.
