Lagos Govt vows to enforce ban on Danfo, Korope operations from Oct 1

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to enforcing the planned ban on unregulated commercial bus operations, specifically Danfo and Korope, along the Lekki-Epe corridor, starting from October 1, 2024.

This move is part of the state’s strategic transportation master plan to improve the commuting experience and regulate the informal transport sector.

According to the State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, the government is determined to implement the ban, despite speculations about its suspension.

Giwa emphasised that the current state of bus operations on the corridor is chaotic and requires collaboration from public transport bus operators to successfully regulate and integrate the informal transport sector into the State’s Bus Reform Initiative.

The government has held stakeholders’ meetings with bus operators and union leaders, urging them to comply with the restructuring plans before the deadline.

The planned solutions include the restructuring of existing unregulated public transport bus operations, deployment of high-capacity buses, reallocation and relocation of Korope/Mini buses to inner routes, re-registration and recertification of all buses, introduction of an e-ticketing system, and provision of transport infrastructure.

Giwa warned that any operator who contravenes the regulations will be fined and may forfeit their vehicles if they ignore the notice of their fines.

“The State Government will not accommodate willful disregard of its existing Transport Sector Reform Law.

“The e-call up system for managing truck movements within the Lekki-Epe axis will also commence on August 1, 2024, to avert severe congestion and improve logistics operations,” He said.
