Lagos Govt to tackle distressed buildings in upcoming dialogue

In a bid to address the rising concerns surrounding distressed buildings across Lagos State, the government has announced plans for an urgent dialogue with property developers and owners. Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, revealed the initiative during a recent press briefing in Alausa, emphasising the need for immediate action.

“The prevalence of distressed buildings in different parts of the state is worrisome,” Olumide stated, urging all stakeholders to participate actively in the forthcoming discussions.

He emphasised the Ministry’s commitment, as outlined in the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law, 2019, to extend its role beyond merely approving new constructions to also providing technical assistance for the remodelling of existing structures.

The Commissioner highlighted that buildings have designated lifespans and require regular maintenance to prevent deterioration.

“Rather than being left to degenerate to the level of distress and eventual collapse, proactive measures should be taken to ensure safety and sustainability,” he added.

The proposed strategic meeting, slated for November 2024, aims to provide technical support and explore viable alternatives to demolition, potentially revolutionising how the state manages distressed buildings.

“This meeting could be a game changer in the sector,” Olumide remarked, indicating a collaborative approach to combating this pressing issue.
