The Lagos State Government has shut down several businesses across Ikorodu, including hotels, bakeries, bars, churches, and even a quarry site, due to violations of environmental laws.

The enforcement operation, led by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) on Wednesday targeted establishments in areas such as Itokin Road, Maya, Erunwen, Elepe Road, Awolowo Way, Ijede Road, and Igbogbo Road.

The move, announced via a statement on the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, is part of LASEPA’s ongoing efforts to tackle noise pollution and other environmental infractions in the state.

The businesses affected include both commercial and religious institutions, such as the National Conference of the Calvary Cross, Cherubim & Seraphim Church, Le Silhouette Hotel, Walik Hotel, Rhonny’s Place, Obans Events Center, and Stop Over Inn. Other closures involved Bigcat Bakery, Girrong Hotel & Bar, Tois Bar & Holiday Inn, Ambassador Villa, and a quarry site.

The statement noted that the enforcement was part of LASEPA’s ongoing commitment to maintaining environmental standards and protecting public health.

“In an effort to combat noise pollution and other environmental violations, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), took decisive action today shutting down multiple establishments in different parts of the State.

“This enforcement operation targeted areas such as Itokin Road, Maya, Erunwen, Elepe Road, Awolowo Way, Ijede Road and the Igbogbo Road area in Ikorodu, reflecting LASEPA’s ongoing commitment to maintaining environmental standards and protecting public health,” the statement read in part.

The action is part of the state government’s wider efforts to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. In the past, key markets like Mile 12, Ladipo, and Oyingbo were temporarily closed until they adhered to sanitary and environmental guidelines.

The Lagos government has stressed that these enforcement measures are crucial to maintaining a clean, safe, and sustainable environment for residents. Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab emphasised that the crackdown is necessary to protect public health and ensure businesses comply with environmental standards.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has made it clear that businesses found violating environmental laws will face similar sanctions.
