Lagos Govt issues warning over heavy rainfall, potential flooding

Lagos residents have been alerted to expect a prolonged and intense rainy season this year, as the state government forecasts above-average rainfall with heightened risks of flooding and strong winds.

The warning comes ahead of the rainy season’s peak, which is expected to begin in late March and extend until early December.

At a press briefing held in Alausa, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, revealed that the state would witness an average annual rainfall of 1,936mm, surpassing the long-term average of the 1991–2020 period.

Wahab noted that the forecast was influenced by the neutral phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), with its impacts most notable in the first half of the year.

“Lagos will experience heavy rainfall, particularly in areas like Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, and Epe, with rainfall amounts exceeding typical seasonal levels,”

Wahab explained, citing specific dates for various locations. Ikeja’s rainfall is predicted to start on April 2 and last until December 2, while Badagry will see its first rains on March 30, continuing until December 4.

The commissioner warned that the state could face flash floods, particularly in low-lying areas, as well as disruptions from strong winds during both the start and end of the rainy season.

“These conditions pose significant risks to lives, properties, and economic activities, including potential flight delays and disruptions to businesses,” Wahab cautioned.

The state government has pledged to strengthen flood control measures in response to the forecasted extreme weather conditions.

Wahab assured Lagosians that the government, in partnership with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), is committed to providing timely weather updates and taking proactive steps to mitigate the adverse effects of the rain.

“We are collaborating with NiMet to ensure that both residents and business owners receive the early warnings necessary to adapt to this year’s rainy season,” he said.

Wahab urged Lagosians to stay informed through official channels, take necessary precautions, and remain vigilant throughout the coming months to safeguard their lives and properties.
