The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LSUBEB) recently hosted a three-day workshop aimed at preparing educators for a successful and healthy retirement, focusing on both mental and financial well-being.

The workshop urged retirees to approach their retirement with intention, enhancing their social connections, and becoming more resourceful in the face of Nigeria’s current economic challenges.

Clinical Psychologist Mohammed Ademola lauded the initiative, highlighting the psychological challenges many retirees face when transitioning from long-established routines to a new phase of life.

“Retirement is a major life transition, and it requires careful preparation. This forum is timely, especially as many retirees struggle with mental health concerns during this transition,” Ademola said.

He stressed the importance of nurturing relationships and resolving conflicts that might become more pronounced after leaving the workplace.

Ademola also encouraged retirees to view this time as an opportunity for self-growth, urging them to develop new skills and repair strained relationships.

“A positive mindset—less judgement and more compassion—will help ease the challenges of retirement,” he explained.

In addition to psychological and social advice, financial planning was a key topic.

Ademola warned retirees against relying too heavily on children for support, suggesting that living within one’s means and engaging in community activities can help reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Acting Director of the Directorate of Medical Administration, Training, and Programmes at the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Mazeedat Erinoso,  underscored the importance of health in retirement.

“Health is wealth. Even if one has good physical health, neglecting mental health can undermine overall well-being,” she noted.

Dr. Erinoso also addressed the significance of financial management in sustaining a healthy lifestyle, advising that retirees prioritise health over social gatherings that could strain finances.

The workshop provided valuable insights on adopting healthy habits and maintaining financial independence, offering attendees tools to live a fulfilling, healthy life post-retirement.
