Lagos cracks down on permit non-compliance, moves to enhance physical planning

By Sodiq Adelakun

The Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development on Wednesday has raised alarms over alarming levels of non-compliance with its physical planning regulations.

Commissioner Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, in a candid discussion with reporters, emphasised the ministry’s commitment to addressing this critical issue, which he described as a “palatable story.”

In recent findings, the ministry identified an “embarrassingly low” rate of compliance among residents regarding obtaining necessary construction permits.

Dr. Olumide remarked, “While we have made efforts to educate the public and streamline our processes, many individuals remain unaware of the importance of obtaining planning permits before commencing construction.”

To counteract these challenges, the ministry will organise a summit on October 15 and 16 aimed at reviewing existing operational frameworks, enhancing communication, and increasing public awareness about the significance of physical planning.

Dr. Olumide stated, “What we have noticed is that there is a gap in terms of communication, in terms of people’s awareness about exactly what we do. Surprisingly, some people do not even know that they need government approval before they commence a building.”

One of the recurring challenges highlighted was the reluctance of applicants to provide accurate information during the permit application process.

“We have encountered instances where applicants submit misleading details, leading to discrepancies between approved plans and actual construction,” he said.

To mitigate these issues, Dr. Olumide strongly encouraged residents to engage with qualified town planners who can guide them through the permit process.

He also reiterated the availability of district offices throughout the state, making it easier for residents to obtain necessary information and services.

“The system is straightforward. All you need to provide is proof of land ownership, architectural drawings, structural plans, and other necessary documents,” he added.

The two-day summit will bring together key stakeholders, including lawyers, developers, and members of the Chamber of Commerce. It will feature a keynote address from former Lagos State Governor Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) and presentations from international experts.

“By engaging with the public, streamlining our processes and promoting compliance, we can create a city that is both vibrant and resilient,” Dr. Olumide concluded, reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to fostering a more sustainable and well-planned Lagos.
