Lagos commissioner calls for road safety measures on hauling wet sand

The Honourable Commissioner of the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development in Lagos, Hon. Ekundayo Alebiosu, has stressed the importance of adhering to road safety and infrastructure preservation laws concerning the movement of tipper trucks carrying freshly dredged sand.

Alebiosu made the remarks in a statement on Monday emphasising that transporting wet sand on the road is illegal.

He explained that wet sand significantly increases the truck’s weight, which doubles its impact on road infrastructure.

 This excess weight causes severe damage, including cracks, potholes, and ruts, leading to rapid deterioration of roads that are not designed to support such stress.

The commissioner urged tipper operators to ensure that dredged sand dries properly before being hauled and that the load does not exceed legal weight limits.

He further emphasised that following these guidelines is important for the preservation of Lagos’ roads and the safety of all road users.

Alebiosu highlighted that the city can maintain better road conditions and reduce the risk of accidents caused by road degradation.
