Lagos Commissioner advises Cooperative College to train students on good values

The Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperative  Dr Lola Akande on Wednesday advised the  Lagos Cooperative College to train students on good values in order to reduce fraudulent practices.

The commissioner gave the advice at the Maiden Matriculation Ceremony of the Lagos State Cooperative College, Oko Oba, Agege.

She said that anyone caught in fraudulent activities or embezzlement of funds would not be spared.

“You must also know your onions so that anywhere you go, you will  be able to express yourself  confidently, especially when an external auditor comes for supervision.

“When there is accountability and reduction of fraud, there will be enough resources to run the economic activities in the country, which will in turn increase the Gross Domestic Product (GDP),’’ she said.

Akande said that it was also important to let the management of the college  know that the ministry  is in support of their efforts and that the Cooperative Department would continue to collaborate with the college in all areas.

Mr Akorede Ojomu, Provost, Lagos State Cooperative College,  said that the college, as a specialised institution, was mandated to provide qualitative education, research and training to members of the cooperative movement and the general public.

According to Ojomu, the mission of the college is build the capacity of cooperators toward sustainable socio-economic growth through the development of highly skilled manpower with cutting edge technology.

The provost noted that in view of the outbreak of the highly contagious COVID-19, the college would deploy cutting edge technology in the delivery of educational contents.

“We will deliver cutting edge technology to our pupils through our centre for Information and Communication, a sustainable Learning Management Platform and e- library.

“This would immensely benefit the student community particularly in the delivery of instructional and educational materials virtually,” he said.

Ojomu urged the students not to lose focus and learn to be time conscious.

He noted that the college had zero tolerance for indolence, defiance, dishonesty and unruliness which ran contrary to the rules of engagement of the college.

Delivering a lecture on “Will Power” in the Quest for Success in Any Life Endeavor, the Chairman, Governing Council of the College, Mr Oyebowale Raji, said that technique and ability alone would not get one to the top.

Raji said that  willpower was the most important factor to a successful life.

“Willpower rises from the heart and cannot be bought by money or be given by others.

“It is your interest and inner strength that helps you to achieve goals in life.

“Willpower makes one to overcome laziness. If you do not have the willingness within you, you might not achieve much in life, “ he said

The chairman urged all to improve on their will power by setting goals for themselves
