Lagos Assembly suspends Alimosho council chairman over alleged misconduct

In a sweeping legislative move, the Lagos State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended Jelili Sulaimon, the chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, following serious allegations of misconduct and defiance against the Assembly.

The decision, reached during Monday’s plenary session, was unanimous among lawmakers, reflecting an urgent response to Sulaimon’s alleged failure to comply with legislative directives.

Presenting the motion for suspension, Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, detailed a troubling investigation into events that transpired in April 2024, which culminated in deadly unrest in the Iyana-Ipaja area.

“Chaos erupted leading to the death of Mr. Micheal Ajayi,” Okanlawon said, asserting that Jelili had orchestrated the disorder. “Despite inviting all relevant stakeholders to provide input, he exhibited an adamant attitude and continued to display misconduct towards the committee.”

The investigation revealed extensive issues, including significant mismanagement of public funds and a blatant disregard for procurement processes. 

anlawon emphasised, “He should be suspended immediately while the vice chairman, Akinpelu Johnson, takes over with immediate effect.”

Supporting the motion, Majority Leader Noheem Adams articulated concerns that Sulaimon’s actions set a poor precedent for local governance.

“The Alimosho council chairman has repeatedly failed to adhere to established standards. His conduct undermines the integrity of our local government system,” said Adams.

Additionally, Hon. Nureni Akinsanya, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts for Local Government, referred to a report from the State Auditor-General that substantiated claims of ongoing financial irregularities connected to Sulaimon’s tenure. “These disparities are serious, and we cannot turn a blind eye,” Akinsanya stated, reinforcing calls for accountability.

After deliberation, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa directed the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to formally communicate the Assembly’s resolution to all relevant authorities, marking a pivotal moment in the quest for transparency and responsibility within Lagos State’s local governance structures.
