Lagos Assembly backs new parking policy, calls for public support

The Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly’s Committee on Transport, Hon. Temitope Adedeji Adewale, has called on Lagosians to rally behind the newly implemented Lagos State Parking Policy, emphasising its importance for urban development and traffic management.

During a recent visit to the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) office, Adewale, accompanied by fellow lawmakers including Hon. Yinka Esho, Hon. Lukman Orelope, Hon. Lanre Afinni, and Hon. Ogunkelu Sylvester, praised LASPA for its commitment to improving parking regulations in the bustling metropolis.

“We are here today for a courtesy visit and to stay informed about your daily activities and operations,” Adewale asserted. He expressed satisfaction with the recent reforms in parking management, which have led to visible improvements, particularly in the Central Business District.

“The introduction of lane markings and directional signage has significantly enhanced parking efficiency and reduced traffic-related issues,” he noted.

Adewale further assured LASPA of the committee’s readiness to provide any necessary support for the efficient execution of its mandate.

In her remarks, the General Manager of LASPA, Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, expressed gratitude for the committee’s support.

Addressing concerns regarding the contentious nature of parking management, she highlighted the crucial role the House plays in the success of their initiatives.

Mrs. Adelabu clarified that while local governments have a stake in parking regulation, the state government does not impose charges on residential property owners for parking on their premises; fees, however, apply for using government setbacks.

She also announced that the pilot phase of the on-street parking initiative is set to commence later this year.

“We believe it will really redefine the space in Lagos,” she added, underscoring the critical steps being taken to establish a command and control centre for effective management.
