Lagos AG calls for swift Justice reform

Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro (SAN), has urged for swift reforms in the administration of justice, emphasising the need for speed and efficiency in the judicial process.

He made the call at the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference in Lagos on Tuesday.

“The way we administer justice must change. It’s no longer enough to provide access to justice. We must ensure that cases are resolved promptly, as justice delayed is justice denied,” Pedro said.

He noted that significant changes are necessary to support economic growth and investment in the state.

Pedro asserted that the state would set a new benchmark for civil cases to be completed within two years and landlord-tenant disputes resolved in no more than six months.

He also highlighted the need for accountability in public services, like water rates, and noted that the justice system would play a role in changing the mindset of people who fail to pay for public services.

The AG also spoke on the recent Federal Government’s review of judicial officers’ salaries, assuring that Lagos state remained a leader in the area of compensation.

He hinted at forthcoming benefits for magistrates in Lagos and promised that the state government would soon unveil new initiatives to enhance their working conditions.

The exhibition at the NBA conference showcased Lagos’ unique blend of culture, technology, and legal innovation, and Pedro expressed his hopes that visitors would leave with a lasting impression of Lagos.
