Labour storm out of meeting after FG fail to reach minimum wage demand

With the current high cost of living, the Organised Labour  comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC had earlier demanded an increment in minimum wage to enable citizens cope with the hike in cost of things.

The meagerly minimum wage of N30,000 is insufficient to afford daily expenses which was why the Nigerian Labour congress called on the FG to effect a substantial change to the minimum wage.

The Organised Labour had earlier demanded a significant increase from N30,000 to N615,000 and gave the FG a deadline of May 31 to conclude negotiations.

On Wednesday, the Tripartite Committee on New National Minimum Wage convened to discuss a way forward on the issue of the minimum wage, but the meeting ended abruptly as representatives of the organized Labour comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC were enraged over the N45,000 offer by the FG which was communicated  through the  Permanent Secretary, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Office and stormed out .

Professor Theophilus Ndubuaku who was representing NLC, when quizzed by newsmen on the outcome of the meeting said the FG was not serious so they had to leave before reaching a consensus. He also said “we asked whether the N45,000 is for transport, food, clothing, housing or for what?”.
